This is my City!

There comes a time every year when we have the world’s biggest celebration at our doorstep, The Greatest Outdoor show on Earth. Calgary Stampede 2012

This year the Calgary Stampede is 100 Years Old! Yes, the Stampede does allow some free rein on behaviour, some “yahoo-ing” at unexpected moments, some wonderful combinations of plaid, syrup on your fingertips and no concern at all for calories (pancakes or liquid beverages).

My city can party! As a transplanted Easterner, thirty five years of being a Calgarian cannot dampen the anticipation I feel for the 10 days of excitement that vibrates in the city. I love Stampede! I realized long ago that you don’t need to be a fan of fast rides to enjoy the Grounds. There’s a variety of musical entertainment, the arts displays, sheep sheering, hypnotists, and the most interesting people-watching all included in the price of your admission. And of course, no self-respecting Calgarian can walk away from a bag of warm mini-donuts.

The city is awash with entertainment, fireworks, tourists who need guidance, and smiling patrons at outdoor patios. How could you not enjoy it!

From the first free Stampede Breakfast until the thunder of the nightly 11pm Fireworks, every day allows us to have just plain fun and to welcome the world into our backyard.

See a few photos of how Stampede began for me.
