Chasing the Apple

Perched on a bar height counter, his apple started rolling.

We all watched as it went on a path of its own choosing, most of us out of reach to catch it. Let’s just call him John, twisted, leaned and fell, his leg getting caught on the metal leg of the chair as it toppled. His leg broke, that is, his actual human leg, the artificial one which had become a part of him since a long ago accident kept him upright. But in spite of his bravado, I suspect it caused him some grief at the point the metal leg attached to his body.

And all for an Apple.

We reach, we lean, we keep our eye on the prize (whether it be a coveted medal, a job promotion, or a girl) and we go through all kinds of acrobatics to hold on to it. Because darn it all, we want it and it should be ours!

Apple

But what would happen if the Apple fell? A little bruising perhaps, but not much more, still suitable for a pie! And in that moment we learn that we don’t always get what we think we want. We can only watch as the unexpected rolls out to greet us.

We can often lean in to reach our prize, and other times the prize is in our learning.
